Compassionate Innovation: A Simple Solution to a Painful Problem

I came across an insanely clever idea today on Instagram, and I can’t stop thinking about it.
A fertility doctor uses an infusion set to make the endless cycle of hormone injections way less stressful (and painful!) for patients.
If you haven’t been around a diabetic person with an insulin pump lately, an infusion set is quite a novel device. It consists of a tiny, flexible plastic tube inserted just below the skin, a port, and a discrete adhesive to hold it in place, allowing insulin (or medication) injections without the use of a traditional needle and syringe. The novel part is that the device can be used multiple times.
The video shows the patient and her partner effortlessly administering prefilled syringes through the port.
Genius, right?
It’s such a simple fix, but it completely changes the game for anyone braving fertility treatments.
Less pain, less anxiety, and more control over the process, the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that makes a real difference in patients’ lives.
Major props to this doctor for caring about patient comfort—because medicine should be about more than just results. It should be about the experience, too.
Have you witnessed a genius repurpose of a medical device?
