When Is It Time for Hospice Care?

“Do you think it’s time for hospice?”
That was the question my next-door neighbor asked me quietly one afternoon.
We’ve been neighbors for almost 20 years. He was my elementary school principal.
I grew up with his kids. We trade eggs and garden tips, and I check in with him daily when he drives his four-wheeler around our rural neighborhood on his routine patrol.
And now he’s watching his wife decline from a chronic illness that’s slowly taken over their lives.
She’s been in and out of the hospital. Her appetite has declined over the last few months. She’s confused more often than not.
And he’s exhausted from caregiving, worry, and not knowing what to do next.
I do my best to answer his question with honesty. He deserves gentle, honest answers. And as a hospice nurse, I know the incredible support that can be provided.
Hospice isn’t about giving up. It’s about giving support, comfort, and dignity when someone needs it most.
My favorite part of the job has always been educating patients and families. That's why writing resonates with me. I get to make a difference in the lives of people I may never meet face-to-face.
If you're a hospice company that wants to educate and comfort families with content like this, I’d love to help.
